Thursday, March 12 - JOHN HASKELL at SKYLIGHT BOOKS

John Haskell, the author of American Purgatorio and I am Not Jackson Pollock, has written a brilliant and weird new novel - Out of My Skin. A writer moves to Los Angeles and finds himself impersonating Steve Martin in order to better navigate his life and surroundings. Actually, he is impersonating an impersonator of Steve Martin. And the book is full of photos of real places (like Skylight Books, Burrito King) impersonating locations. Are you kidding me? Amazing. Haskell places this search for identity and happiness in "Los Angeles... the City of Dreams; also the City of Angels; Jim Morrison called it the City of Lights", a tough place to find something real, yet this book does a beautiful job of creating a strange and moving portrait.
