@ LACMA 2.2.12- Lars von Trier's Zentropa (aka Europa) .

New 35mm Print!

Lars von Trier’s noir-soaked thriller casts postwar Germany as a Kafkaesque dreamscape haunted by “werewolves” (underground Nazi terrorists). Leopold Kessler, a young and idealistic American of German stock, returns to the old country and takes a civilian job as a sleeping-car conductor for the mysterious Zentropa railway company where he falls into the clutches of femme fatale Katharina Hartmann (feral Barbara Sukowa). A hypnotic blend of CinemaScope cinematography, rear projections and mixed color stocks, Zentropa (releases worldwide as Europa) finds von Trier at the peak of his powers as a movie-mad stylist.

An Evening with Lucinda Williams @ UCLA Live 1.27. -

One of America’s finest singer-songwriters, Lucinda Williams’ substantial talents transcend the genres she works so handily with, from folk to blues and country-rock. After breaking out of the underground, she cemented her place in popular music with 1998’s Car Wheels On a Gravel Road. TIME magazine named her “America’s best songwriter” in 2002 and she’s won three Grammy awards (and counting). Her latest work, the emotional and evocative Blessed was released in March 2011 and was quickly hailed by many critics and fans as her finest work to date. Whether she’s plugged-in and backed by a full band, or solo with her guitar, Lucinda’s forthright style and authentic warmth always tug at the heartstrings and stimulate the mind.

It will be a very special evening of Lucinda’s forthright style and authentic warmth. She will perform a solo acoustic set, then a duo with rising guitar star Blake Mills, then a rousing set with her full band, featuring Mills on guitar. And, Blake will open the evening with a short solo performance set. The 23-year-old L.A. native, formerly of the rock outfit Dawes, has forged a remarkable career that has seen everyone from Kid Rock to Cass McCombs solicit his services as a guitarist. He’s been on tour with Lucinda throughout 2011 and recently released his debut solo album Break Mirrors, which comes out of a long tradition of mellow Southern California rock.

@ Cinefamily - JEAN LUC GODARD's latest (and possibly last) feature film 'Film Socialisme'. 1.23.

5:15pm

Film Socialisme
A scintillatingly deconstructed filmic essay that’s as lyrically persuasive as it is visually and sonically fractured, Film Socialisme might be Godard’s most rigorous and thorough reinvention of cinema yet. Opening on a cruise ship in the middle of the Mediterranean sea , the film unfolds elegantly into a global tryptic whose second panel shows us a family-run garage in France, and whose final segment explodes across a half-dozen historical Mediterranean nexus points. A humanist critique of how culture and commerce intersect and collide across international borders, Film Socialismes kaleidoscopically color-saturated screen overflows with life – spies, would-be-presidents, ornery children, Patti Smith(!), immigrants, and even a llama help make up the film’s populist panorama. The soundscape is an even more densely populated, intricately edited polyglot maze of overlapping languages and ambient recordings. For all its fractured experimentation, Film Socialisme is nearly seamless — it doesn’t so much shatter cinematic conventions as melt them. Our screenings of Film Socialisme are presented with FULL English subtitles (for the first time ever in the U.S.!), rather than previous international screenings’ “Navajo English” subtitles.
Dir. Jean-Luc Godard, 2010, HD presentation, 102 min.

Vivre Sa Vie (aka My Life To Live) – 7:45pm

One of Godard’s saddest and most influential films, the masterpiece Vivre Sa Vie streamlines the director’s defiant aesthetic into the sharpest crystalline vision out of all his earliest efforts — and also acts as a microscope under which his emotions toward wife/frequent collaborator Anna Karina can be viewed through highly engaging formal rigor. The film eavesdrops the viewer into the vicinity of Karina’s bob-coifed “Nana”, a young, beautiful Parisian who dreams of becoming an actress, and, in a series of increasingly heartbreaking tableaux, falls into casual prostitution to makes ends meet. Though Godard tackles the heavy-duty thesis of the sexual alienation of women with aplomb, Vivre Sa Vie’s greatest heights occur in its brief narrative asides: Nana’s late night, tear-stained spiritual with Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc, her existential café debate with philosopher Brice Parain, and her seductive-yet-sad jukebox-accompanied stride around a grimy pool-hall — a moment which forever cements Nana as the most haunting out of any Godard character creation.
Dir. Jean-Luc Godard, 1962, 35mm, 85 min.

@ CINEFAMILY - Garry Shandling Presents: 'The King of Comedy'

January 12, 2011 - Garry Shandling is simply one of the most influential comedians of our time. His first appearance on the Tonight Show came just three years after he began performing stand-up, and soon after that he was sitting behind Carson’s legendary desk, guest-hosting the show. It was during those stints filling in for Johnny that Garry began to formulate the aesthetic of his transcendent and legendary HBO comedy series The Larry Sanders Show: a hilarious and painfully truthful behind-the-scenes examination of a late-night network talk show. Garry is the dream comedian to kick-off the WFiFF, and for his film pick, has decided to present 1983’s The King of Comedy, Martin Scorsese’s fascinating and disturbing tale of fame. This dark comedy follows Robert De Niro as a delusional comedy nerd who’ll go to truly insane lengths to get onto a famous TV talk show hosted by Jerry Lewis. Essential viewing. Garry Shandling will be at the Cinefamily to perform, as well as introduce the film, and participate in a Q&A afterwards!

Dir. Martin Scorsese, 1983, 35mm, 109 min.

PINA opens in Los Angeles Friday, January 13 @ The LANDMARK.

"Dance, dance, or we are lost." Pina Bausch's final words summarize her life and provide the inspiration for acclaimed director Wim Wenders' (Wings of Desire, Buena Vista Social Club) breathtaking tribute to the legendary choreographer. Bausch and her Tanztheater Wuppertal elevated dance into brilliantly subversive new expressive realms, and in this exhilarating film Wenders captures the raw, heart-stopping intensity of the movement and in stunning 3D transforms it into a transcendent cinematic experience. An official selection of the Berlinale, Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals, and now Germany's official entry for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Pina 3D features interviews with and performances by Bausch's beloved original company members, and offers an indelible image of an artist who went the full distance in her uncommonly rich creative life.
