@ LACMA 2.2.12- Lars von Trier's Zentropa (aka Europa) .

New 35mm Print!

Lars von Trier’s noir-soaked thriller casts postwar Germany as a Kafkaesque dreamscape haunted by “werewolves” (underground Nazi terrorists). Leopold Kessler, a young and idealistic American of German stock, returns to the old country and takes a civilian job as a sleeping-car conductor for the mysterious Zentropa railway company where he falls into the clutches of femme fatale Katharina Hartmann (feral Barbara Sukowa). A hypnotic blend of CinemaScope cinematography, rear projections and mixed color stocks, Zentropa (releases worldwide as Europa) finds von Trier at the peak of his powers as a movie-mad stylist.
