From Kevin Macdonald (director of Touching The Void and The Last King of Scotland) comes the definitive doc portrait of one of pop music’s greatest icons. Exhaustively researched, Marley abandons hagiography in order to dig down into the inner core of the story — and to dissolve your own pre-conceived notions of Marley the man. As he speaks to not only the major living players of the Marley-era Jamaican music scene (like Lee “Scratch” Perry, Jimmy Cliff and Bunny Wailer), but also to Marley’s voluminous family members, Macdonald achieves a revelatory depiction of one of the most epic human stories of the 1970s — one full of Bob’s many mistresses and baby mamas, a childhood stint in Delaware (!) and even a near-successful assassination attempt on his life. And to top it off, it’s full of killer rare performance footage, from the Wailers’ first UK TV appearance, to the impossible moment when Marley yanked warring Jamaican politicos on both sides of the party divide onstage during a benefit concert (think Dubya and Obama high-fiving in front of a stadium crowd, and you’ve got some idea of how crazy it is.)

No matter whether you’re a casual observer or a hardcore fan — this film will touch you. The Hammer Museum presents a two-night screening of Shoah (1985) on Monday, March 26 at 7pm and Tuesday, March 27 at 7pm in the Billy Wilder Theater.

Shoah, Claude Lanzmann’s monumental epic on the Holocaust, features interviews with survivors, bystanders, and perpetrators in 14 countries. The film does not contain any historical footage but rather features interviews that seek to remember the Jewish tragedy and revisits places where the crimes took place.

Friday Night Frights @ CINEFAMILY - Tonight! Dario Argentos 'Phenomena, aka Creepers'.

One of Dario Argento's creepiest classics!

Coming hot on the heels of his shock classics Deep Red and Suspiria, Italian horror maestro Dario Argento was at the height of his powers in the early ‘80s — and Phenomena, aka Creepers, plays as both a sort of greatest-hits package of the director’s best impulses and fetishes, and a brain-busting head-spinner that stands mightily on its own. A very young Jennifer Connelly stars as a psychic ingenue (with a love of creepy-crawly insects) who’s menaced by a giallo-style killer at a Swiss Academy for girls. Throw in a a razor-wielding chimp(!), a typically nutty Donald Pleasance, a stellar soundtrack featuring Iron Maiden, Motorhead and (of course) the inimitable Goblin — and you have one of the best psychotronic film freakouts of the era. Tonight, Cinefamily we’ll be screening Creepers, the original American release cut — but have no fear, as it’s considered by many to be the preferred, faster-paced version of the film. So come get your creep on with this ultra-rare 35mm screening of one of Argento’s creepiest classics!

Michael Kohn Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of original watercolor paintings by Camille Rose Garcia. These beautifully intricate paintings were created for the illustrated book of the Grimm Brothers' classic fairy tale, Snow White (Published by Harper Design, February 28, 2012). Her previous illustrated book was a New York Times Bestseller and was described as "Brilliant" by New York Magazine.

Camille Rose Garcia's wholly original interpretation of the classic tale of Snow White is underscored by her dark and whimsical style. With a stylistic nod to the watercolored animation backrounds of early Disney movies, Garcia references the golden age of early animation as well as vintage German fairy tale books. Garcia adds back the darker elements present in the original Brothers Grimm text, inverting the Disneyesque paradigm of simplistic happy endings and everlasting halcyon days into something closer to the original macabre German folktale.

These incredible paintings will be on view at the Michael Kohn Gallery for a period coinciding with the release of the first two major Hollywood films based off the same tale of Snow White.

The illustrated book will be available at the gallery, and Garcia will be present for signing during the opening reception.

Camille Rose Garcia was born in 1970 in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in the generic suburbs of Orange County, visiting Disneyland and going to punk shows with the other disenchanted youth of that era. Her paintings of creepy cartoon children living in wasteland fairy tales are critical commentaries on the failures of capitalist utopias. Creative influences include Phillip K. Dick, William Burroughs, Henry Darger, and Walt Disney, as well as politically aware bands like The Clash and Dead Kennedys.

Garcia received a Masters of Fine Arts from The University of California, Davis. A solo mid career survey of her work was shown at the San Jose Museum of Art in May 2007.

Three books of her work have been published, her children’s book, The Magic Bottle, 2006, published by Fantagraphics Books, The Saddest Place on Earth, 2005, published by Last Gasp Publishing and Grand Central Press, and Tragic Kingdom, 2007, published by Last Gasp Press and The San Jose Museum of Art.

Garcia’s work has been featured in Flaunt Magazine, Nylon, Paper Magazine, Modern Painters, Art Prostitute, Juxtapoz Magazine and The Los Angeles Times. Her art has been exhibited in Spain, Germany, France, and Italy, as well as numerous cities in the United States. She currently lives in Northern California.

@ Prism - OS GEMEOS, 'Miss You' Feb 25, — Mar 24, 2012

PRISM is pleased to present Miss You, an exhibition of new paintings and sculptures within an immersive installation by famed Brazilian artists Os Gemeos. In Miss You, Os Gemeos plays with fantastical notions of magical realism. It is a visual exploration of the Twins' interest in life’s natural magic, its dreams, sentiments, surrealism, realizations, relationships, love, hate and ultimately underlines their intrinsic curiosity to question everything around them. Through their visual language, Os Gemeos creates a beautiful universe populated with their iconic characters and introduces the viewer into a vibrant world of imagination that stems from their subconscious.

For this exhibition, Os Gemeos takes the viewer through a labyrinth of visual language fashioned from the artists’ minds. Upon entering the exhibition, the viewer is transported into an alternate world filled with color, light and sound. While each work reverberates individually, together they expand through a range of pictorial styles and concepts. In Do Outro Lada Da Lua (The Other Side of the Moon), 2012, the Twins incorporate stripes, opposing colors and perspective tropes to give the optical illusion that their signature yellow character is trapped in a falling position. Miss You asks the viewer to let go, to be naïve, to resist reality, if only for a moment, and accept a world where dreams and imagination are allowed to flourish.

Os Gemeos, the Brazilian twins Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo, are best known for their fantastical and expansive large-scale installations and murals. The main influence of their work comes from the surroundings in which they grew up. They began to experiment at age twelve on the walls, objects and materials in the megalopolis of São Paulo. This helped shape their aesthetic vernacular into a distinct and recognizable style. Os Gemeos work as one unit in every aspect of their creative process, from the paintings to the more recent animation videos they incorporate into their installation environments.

Os Gemeos garnered attention in 2005, when they exhibited at Deitch Projects in New York. In recent years, they have participated in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. They have also exhibited internationally across Europe, Latin America and Asia, as well as their native Brazil. Os Gemeos were included in The Art in the Streets exhibition at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 2011 and will be exhibiting at the ICA in Boston in the summer of 2012. This is their first solo exhibition at PRISM.
