@ REDCAT - The West Coast Premiere of Teatro en el Blanco: Diciembre

Now thru February 27

Teatro en el Blanco: Diciembre

From the roiling imagination of Chilean writer-director Guillermo Calderón comes this politically charged, haunting drama about a near-future war in the Andes. Peppered with surprising doses of pitch-black comedy, Diciembre takes place in Santiago on Christmas Eve 2014 with the city besieged by Peruvian forces. Young soldier Jorge returns home on a 24-hour leave to celebrate the holiday with his pregnant twin sisters, who each have sharply different views on nationalism and the morality of war. One wants Jorge to defect, the other demands he return to the fight. Jorge, however, has his own take on the matter. Smartly produced by his dynamic Santiago-based company Teatro en el Blanco (“Theater on Target”), Calderón’s play strips away ostentatious theatrical conceit for us to hear clearly the terror knocking at the door. Featuring Paula Zúñiga, Trinidad González and Jorge Becker. Performed in Spanish with English supertitles.

FRIDAY 2.26 @ The Norton Simon in Pasadena

GAZE:: Portraits of Artists and Composers

As Jawlensky, Klee and other artists challenged tradition with their unique approaches to portrait painting, composers such as Scriabin and Hindemith experimented in their own creations. Dr. Chambers-Salazar performs a variety of piano works from the early 20th century and discusses the interconnections among the artists and composers who transformed the landscape in their respective fields.

Go See - The WOOSTER GROUP : North Atlantic w/ Frances McDormand Now @ REDCAT

The Wooster Group: North Atlantic

Los Angeles premiere

Now thru 2.21.10

Directed by Elizabeth LeCompte Featuring Ari Fliakos, Frances McDormand, Scott Shepherd, Kate Valk, and special guest artists Steve Cuiffo, Koosil-ja Hwang, Paul Lazar, Zachary Oberzan, Jenny Seastone-Stern and Maura Tierney.

North Atlantic takes a satiric look at the role of the military and the growing influence of technology in American culture during the late Cold War period, after Vietnam and before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The story follows an international peacekeeping force on an aircraft carrier in the North Atlantic, tracing the cultural and sexual dynamics that rise to the fore as they carry out their top-secret mission. Written expressly for the company by James Strahs in 1982, North Atlantic joined a series of Wooster Group works rooted in American themes and told in the rhythms of the American vernacular—works based on texts by Thornton Wilder, Arthur Miller, Eugene O’Neill, and Gertrude Stein. A nostalgia piece, it brings the analog (pre-digital) 1980s to life through slang, song and dance. Photo courtesy of Paula Court

Friday NIght 2.12 @ the BOOTLEG - Chicago Underground Duo

Chicago Underground Duo has been part of a new generation of music improvisers that emerged in Chicago in the 1990’s. Their live shows have often been described as astounding. “Percussionist Chad Taylor and cornet player Rob Mazurek are the Chicago Underground Duo. Since the Chicago Underground collective expands or contracts with each project, they’re also two-thirds of the Chicago Underground Trio and half of the Chicago Underground Quartet. Born in the 1990s out of the fertile Chicago improv scene, the group has, in its various permutations, produced a consistently excellent body of recorded music that mixes large amounts of improvisation with electronica, sampling, and a vast assortment of world music influences that are always organically absorbed and never self-consciously imitated.

Czech Your Head TONIGHT @ CINEFAMILY

Czech New Wave Series Starts Tonight:

Daisies

Daisies is a bubbling and buoyant spring of irrepressible female creativity; it is an overflowing audio-visual bouquet of color, music, and texture; it is a freewheeling and effervescent farce, a formal free-for-all, a paradoxical mixture of bourgeois indulgence and cultural critique, and it's your next favorite movie. Two young Czech girls (both named Marie) decide that the world is so corrupt that they might as well join in, and they do so with wild abandon -- prancing, food-fighting, pranking old men, carousing in nightclubs, and creating anarchy everywhere they go. Director Vera Chytilova's love of cinema's potential is both playful and palpable, as exuberant as the spirit of the two "daisies" whose misadventures have surprising weight and meaning. Banned upon its release by the Czech government, Daisies has become a major cult favorite thanks to its dazzling setpieces, the charismatic and fashionable art-girl heroines, and an infectious sense of fun that's as potent today as it was when it first premiered behind the Iron Curtain.

Dir. Věra Chytilová, 1966, 35mm, 74 min.
